The Story of the International Ethiopian Evangelical Church

The International Ethiopian Evangelical Church (IEEC) stands as a beacon of faith, hope, and community for thousands of Ethiopian and Eritrean nationals in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area and beyond. What began as a small Bible study among friends has grown into a vibrant and far-reaching ministry that touches lives across the globe.

Humble Beginnings

Nearly 44 years ago, a handful of Ethiopian migrants living in the DC area began gathering for weekly Bible study. These intimate meetings were more than just spiritual reflections—they were lifelines for individuals navigating a new culture, language, and way of life. At that time, the group consisted of fewer than five people, but their passion for Christ and desire to build a Christ-centered community laid the foundation for what would become IEEC.

A Flourishing Community

Over the years, the Lord has richly blessed the work of the pioneers. From its modest beginnings, IEEC has grown into a dynamic church that now serves thousands of believers. The church provides a space where individuals and families can grow in their faith, worship in their heart language, and connect with others who share a common heritage and hope.

IEEC’s ministries span every age and stage of life, offering Bible studies, youth and children’s programs, discipleship opportunities, prayer meetings, outreach ministries, and much more. The church is deeply committed to biblical teaching, Spirit-led worship, and community transformation.

A Global Reach

IEEC's impact is not limited to the DC area. The church has planted and supported several branch churches across the United States, including congregations in Maryland, Virginia, New York, Florida, and South Carolina. These churches continue the mission of reaching the Ethiopian and Eritrean diaspora with the gospel.

The ministry has also extended internationally. IEEC has been supporting churches and fellowships in countries such as Egypt, Lebanon, Djibouti, and Ethiopia, expanding its reach to communities in need of spiritual nourishment and support. These international branches depict IEEC’s commitment to spreading the good news of Jesus Christ to all corners of the world.

Looking Ahead

As IEEC approaches its 45th year, the vision remains strong: to be a Christ-centered, Spirit-filled, and mission-driven church that equips believers, strengthens families, and transforms communities—locally and globally. With God's guidance, IEEC continues to serve as a spiritual home for many, a lighthouse for the lost, and a voice of hope for generations to come.

What We Believe

STATEMENT OF FAITH

WE BELIEVE...
The Scriptures are inspired by God and declare His design and plan for mankind. The Bible is the infallible, authoritative Word of God and is the final rule of faith and conduct.

WE BELIEVE...
There is only One True God — revealed in three persons (commonly known as the Trinity)

 God the Father,

 God the Son, and

 God the Holy Spirit.

He is the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer of all things.

WE BELIEVE...
In the Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ. As God’s Son, Jesus was both fully human and fully divine.
We believe in:

  • His virgin birth
  • His sinless life
  • His miracles
  • His atoning death on the cross
  • His bodily resurrection
  • His ascension to the right hand of the Father
  • His personal return in power and glory

WE BELIEVE...
Every person can have restored fellowship with God through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, His death, and His resurrection — known as salvation (being born again).

WE BELIEVE...
The Holy Spirit dwells in every believer, empowering them for godly living and effective service. We believe in the baptism in the Holy Spirit as a distinct experience following salvation, with the initial physical evidence of speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance.

WE BELIEVE...
In the practice of water baptism by immersion as a public declaration of faith, and in regular participation in Communion as a remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice.

WE BELIEVE...
Divine healing is provided for in Christ’s atonement and is available to all believers today.

WE BELIEVE...
The Church is the Body of Christ and has a mission to reach the world with the Gospel, make disciples, and serve in love.

WE BELIEVE...
In the Blessed Hope — the rapture of the Church at Christ’s return. We also believe in the final judgment and eternal life for the righteous and eternal separation from God for the unrighteous.

  • About God

WE BELIEVE...The Scriptures are Inspired by God and declare His design and plan for mankind.

WE BELIEVE...There is only One True God–revealed in three persons...Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (commonly known as the Trinity).

WE BELIEVE...In the Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ. As God's son Jesus was both human and divine.

  • About Humanity

WE BELIEVE...though originally good, Man Willingly Fell to Sin–ushering evil and death, both physical and spiritual, into the world.

WE BELIEVE...Every Person Can Have Restored Fellowship with God Through 'Salvation' (trusting Christ, through faith and repentance, to be our personal Savior).

  • About Salvation

     Salvation: A Gift Through Faith

Salvation is the greatest gift ever offered to humanity. It is made available to anyone who believes in their heart and confesses with their mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord—that He died for our sins and rose again to give us eternal life, and freed us from sin, death and the power of Satan (Acts 16:31; Romans 10:9–10, Rom 8:2, Col 2:13-14)).

This gift is not something we can earn. No amount of good deeds, kindness, or moral living can qualify us for it. As Ephesians 2:8–9 reminds us:  “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

It’s not about being “good enough”—because none of us are. It's about placing our trust in the finished work of Jesus on the cross.
Salvation is a matter of faith—acting on what we believe based on God’s Word.

Think of it like this: if someone gives you a beautifully wrapped gift, it doesn’t become yours until you reach out and receive it. In the same way, God has already offered us the gift of eternal life—but we must accept it by faith.

    A Simple Prayer for Salvation

If you haven’t yet received this gift, you can do it right now. There’s no special formula—what matters is your heart. You can pray something like this:

“Lord Jesus, I believe that You are the Son of God. I believe You died for my sins and rose again. I confess You as my Lord and Savior. Please forgive me, make me new, and help me to live for You. Thank You for saving me. Amen.”

    What Happens After Salvation?

Salvation is just the beginning of a new life. When you receive Christ:

    • You become a child of God (John 1:12)and a new creation (2 Cor 5:17).

    • The Holy Spirit comes to live in you, guiding and transforming your life (Romans 8:14, 1Cor 3:16).

    • You begin a journey of growth, learning more about God and His purpose for you through His Word, prayer, and fellowship with other believers.

    • You are empowered to walk in freedom and purpose, no longer bound by your past.

Remember, you’re not walking this journey alone—God is with you, and the Church is your family.

  • About The holy spirit & the Church

WE BELIEVE...the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a Special Experience Following Salvation that empowers believers for witnessing and effective service, just as it did in New Testament times.

WE BELIEVE... The Initial Physical Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is ‘Speaking in Tongues,’ as experienced on the Day of Pentecost and referenced throughout Acts and the Epistles.

WE BELIEVE...and practice two ordinances—(1) Water Baptism by Immersion after repenting of one's sins and receiving Christ's gift of salvation, and (2) Holy Communion (the Lord's Supper) as a symbolic remembrance of Christ's suffering and death for our salvation.

WE BELIEVE...The Church has a Mission to seek and save all who are lost in sin. We believe 'the Church' is the Body of Christ and consists of the people who, throughout time, have accepted God's offer of redemption (regardless of religious denomination) through the sacrificial death of His son Jesus Christ.

WE BELIEVE...A Divinely Called and Scripturally Ordained Leadership Ministry Serves the Church. The Bible teaches that each of us under leadership must commit ourselves to reach others for Christ, to worship Him with other believers, to build up or edify the body of believers–the Church and to Meet human need with ministries of love and compassion.

WE BELIEVE...Divine Healing of the Sick is a Privilege for Christians Today and is provided for in Christ's atonement (His sacrificial death on the cross for our sins).

WE BELIEVE...in The Blessed Hope—When Jesus Raptures His Church Prior to His Return to Earth (the second coming). At this future moment in time all believers who have died will rise from their graves and will meet the Lord in the air, and Christians who are alive will be caught up with them, to be with the Lord forever.

WE BELIEVE...in The Millennial Reign of Christ when Jesus returns with His saints at His second coming and begins His benevolent rule over earth for 1,000 years. This millennial reign will bring the salvation of national Israel and the establishment of universal peace.

WE BELIEVE...A Final Judgment Will Take Place for those who have rejected Christ. They will be judged for their sin and consigned to eternal punishment in a punishing lake of fire.

WE BELIEVE...and look forward to the perfect New Heavens and a New Earth that Christ is preparing for all people, of all time, who have accepted Him. We will live and dwell with Him there forever following His millennial reign on Earth. 'And so shall we forever be with the Lord!'
